June 21 STEAM Stars: Importance of Water, Cloud Formation and Rainforests

Fun activities during our STEAM Stars today at Doyle Library providing information, cool videos and fun scientific experiments surrounding cloud formation, the importance of water to our lives and the devastating losses of rain forest habitats around the world.

Each child created their own working cloud formation with colors to exemplify the evaporation, condensation and precipitation cycles of the earth.

Another creative and informative project included decorating and formulating each child's own rain stick, which they each took home to remind them of the important rain forest lessons from the class.

June 14 STEAM Stars: Created grass heads to study how vegetation prevents erosion and created bird viewers

We studied the importance of irrigation, grass, and vegetation to preventing erosion during our last STEAM Stars. We studied birds that have habitats near or in water and the Alton Dam and Locks Interpretive Center. Each child created and decorated a grass head planter with watering and growing schedule. Each child also created and decorated their own bird watcher to be able to focus clearly on birds in their habitats.

STEAM Stars June 7: Studied color and light and upcoming solar eclipse

Exploring our wonderful, and sometimes challenging world, through scientific experimentation at Doyle Public Library provides young people with the skills and confidence to tackle tough science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) subjects.

Wednesday, June 7, our STEAM Stars explored color and the color wheel, learning how to mix primary and secondary colors to create a myriad of new colors for their very own Pineapple Art project.  Young people learned about light and how shining the light through a prism breaks the light into all the colors of the rainbow.

As our STEAM Stars explored light and the sun’s properties, we learned how important it is to avoid ultraviolet (UV) rays and how to protect themselves from the sun, and avoiding too much exposure to the sun’s harmful rays.

Our young people then learned about how the sun rises and falls in the sky by tracking their shadows and explored the upcoming solar eclipse on August 21, making an eclipse viewer to safely view the upcoming solar eclipse.  They learned about how the moon causes the eclipse by intercepting the pathway orbit between the sun and the earth, exploring how the little moon can cover the great big sun to create the eclipse.

Every Wednesday morning, from 11 to noon, Doyle Public Library hosts its Summer Reading Program STEAM Stars providing young people with fun science-based learning activities and learning projects throughout June, July and the first two weeks of August.
